How to get started with CoinTracker

New to CoinTracker? This quick start guide shows you how to connect wallets, sync your portfolio, and generate crypto tax reports fast and hassle-free.

1. Create an account

Start by creating an account on any device:

Web

  1. Visit www.cointracker.io on your computer.
  2. Click Start for free.
  3. Enter your email address and click continue.
    • You can sign up using your email address, or choose one of the available “Sign up with” options for faster onboarding:
      • Continue with Google
      • Continue with Coinbase
      • Continue with Apple
  4. Create a password and click continue.

App

  1. Install the CoinTracker app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and tap Start for free.
  3. Swipe through the introduction, then tap Create account.
  4. Complete the sign-up process in the web browser that opens.
  5. After completing the steps, check your email address and confirm your email to complete registration.

Consider before signing up:

If you use Google, Coinbase, or Apple to sign in, you will not be able to

change your email later. We also recommend avoiding Apple’s “Hide My

Email” option, as the private email it creates can’t be updated in

CoinTracker.

For users who already have a Coinbase account, signing up with Coinbase is recommended because it automatically connects the Coinbase account during sign-up, resulting in a faster and smoother setup experience.

In all cases, users are encouraged to use a permanent and accessible email address.

2. Connecting wallets and exchanges to your account

Connect wallets and exchanges

Connect your wallets and exchanges to start tracking your portfolio value, performance, and estimated taxes.

To get value quickly, focus on connecting at least one account—and ideally two—so CoinTracker can provide more complete insights right away.

The easiest ways to get started are:

  • Connect Coinbase (if it wasn’t already connected during sign-up)
  • Add an on-chain wallet using a wallet address, ENS handle, or WalletConnect

Pro tip: Some integrations take a bit more time to set up (for example, if they require API keys or a CSV upload). We recommend adding those later—after you’ve connected your easiest accounts first.

Once connected, your initial sync and calculations typically take a couple of minutes, though some exchanges may take longer depending on the size of your history or the integration.

Be sure to include every wallet—even inactive ones—to keep your transaction history accurate and complete.

Organizing your connected wallets

Rename wallets after connecting them, especially if you use multiple wallets on the same chain (e.g., MetaMask, Solflare, Phantom). Clear names make tracking easier and simplify reconciliation later.

Review your transaction history

A complete transaction history is essential for accurate tax calculations.

After connecting your wallets and exchanges, review your transactions. You can use this checklist to review your account for accuracy.

3. Explore your portfolio dashboard

What you’ll see after your first sync

Once your first wallet or exchange is connected, you’ll land on your portfolio dashboard—your home base for tracking crypto in one place.

Here you can:

  • See your portfolio value
  • Track performance over time
  • View your estimated tax position based on your synced activity

As you connect more accounts, CoinTracker will build a clearer picture of your activity and help improve the accuracy of your performance tracking and tax calculations.

4. Pick the ideal CoinTracker plan for you

After connecting your wallets and exchanges

CoinTracker will calculate your annual transaction count to help you choose the right subscription plan.

For ease of getting started, it’s important to know that CoinTracker pricing is based only on your transactions for the current tax year, not your entire historical transaction history. This makes it easy to switch to CoinTracker and get a fresh start, even if you’ve been trading crypto for years.

Once your transactions are synced and your plan is selected, you’ll be ready to generate and download your crypto tax reports.
